EU Competition Guide: A brief guide

This is a brief overview of European Union competition law. EU rules impose strict controls on agreements which restrict, prevent or distort competition. Broadly, the EU rules apply to arrangements which restrict competition in the EU and have an effect on trade between EU Member States. National competition legislation will apply to arrangements which affect competition and trade in a particular jurisdiction. Mergers are also regulated under both EU and national competition laws.

Although the main focus of this guide is on EU rules, certain pertinent elements of national (Member State) legislation will be mentioned where appropriate. In any event, when considering the levels of compliance with competition law within your business, the EU rules should be consulted as an appropriate gauge of acceptable and prohibited behaviour.
